Natural wood decks are timeless and when designed and assembled by experienced deck contractor it can be one of the most beautiful decking materials out there. While out in nature why not have a natural and long-lasting material beneath your feet.  There are numerous types of woods to choose from two of the most popular ones being cedar and redwood. Cedar is beautiful wood that is well suited for decking surfaces. It is naturally durable easily resisting rot, destruction by insects and decay.  It has been known to decades and even centuries when properly cared for. While being a softer wood it is more than durable enough for most applications. It should be taken into account that due to its softness it could potentially be scratched outdoor furniture or pets. Redwood decking is also a popular choice. Once again it is naturally resistant to rot, insects and decay. Redwood is also like cedar in the fact that it is a softwood that comes with minimal downsides. Redwood is known for its beautiful red color that can vary in darkness. By applying a sealer periodically its redness can be maintained for years to come. By letting it age naturally it turns into a attractive silvery grey. 

Pressure treated pine is an excellent option for those who want an affordable long-lasting deck that will not rot or decay. Pine unlike cedar and redwood is not naturally rot resistant. By using high pressure to force preservative chemicals into the wood a durable and unbelievably long-lasting wood product is created. Pressure treated pine is generally green in color that will weather to a lighter more natural color quite quickly. Due to its wonderful weather resistant properties it is commonly used for the framing and support structure of many other types of decks. Anywhere wood comes into contact with the ground is a great place to use ground contact rated pressure treated wood. The most common issue consumers have with pine decking is that it requires more care over time. Sealing is important to keep it looking sharp and prevent splitting and splintering of the decking boards. All in all pressure treated pine is a great choice for a durable long lasting decking material. 

Composite decking is a made of recycled wood fibers and plastics that are formed into planks that closely resemble wood.  The planks come in a wide range of colors and many different textures and faux wood grains are available to choose from.  There are many reasons composite decking is so popular.  Firstly, it requires very little maintenance when compared with natural wood. It does not need to be refinished, sealed or painted making it a no brainer for many who value their time and money. Often composite decking is backed by warranties that are unmatched by other decking materials. While composite may be the best choice for the average homeowner it has downsides just like anything else. It does not have the natural beauty of wood and that is enough to turn off some people. It can be expensive when compared to cost effective pressure treated wood. Finally, it cannot be stained to alter its appearance. While these are all minor pitfalls they should be considered carefully. 

PVC is short for poly vinyl chloride and most people know it because it is a common material used to make pipes. It is also a common decking material, but don’t worry, its not the bright white that you may be thinking. PVC decking is an incredibly durable material that does not contain any natural wood like composite decking does. This makes it completely resistant to rot and insects. Like composite it comes in many different colors, textures and patterns making it easy to create a deck that fits your design preferences. It is commonly used in high traffic areas and in commercial decking applications. The downside of PVC decking is it is the more expensive option and therefore may not be the best option for many residential decks.  Dark colors can lead to heat absorption and a dangerously hot deck if in direct sunlight.
